Massachusetts has officially gone paperless. Your passing Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) is now uploaded securely to the RMV database the second your vehicle passes. Here is how the new process works:

  1. 1
The Test: We perform your complete state-mandated safety and emissions audit.
  2. 2
The Sticker: Our inspector applies your new passing sticker directly to the windshield.
  3. 3
The Report: Scan the QR code or tap the Mass. Vehicle Check logo to view and download your digital VIR.

"My check engine light came on right before I needed a sticker. The mechanics here didn't try to upsell me. They pulled the codes, explained the issue, fixed it fast, and got me my pass. Best shop in Westfield."

"I drive for Uber so I need my TNC inspection done quick to stay on the road. Mass State Auto got me in and out on a Tuesday morning in 15 minutes. Very professional, extremely clean bays. I'll be back for my brakes."

SL

"I failed my inspection at a dealership and they quoted me $1,200 for emissions repairs. Brought it here for a second opinion. Turns out it was just a bad sensor. Passed easily. Honest, blue-collar mechanics."

Inspection FAQs & Policy Updates

By state law, you must present a current and active Massachusetts Vehicle Registration document with a valid VIN that matches the one found on the dashboard. Inspections are performed on a first-come, first-served basis. The standard fee is $35.
Yes. For vehicles subject to emissions testing, an illuminated "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light indicates a malfunction and results in an automatic state failure. Furthermore, if the state workstation cannot establish communication with your vehicle's OBD-II diagnostic port during the test, it will also trigger a rejection. Our technicians are fully equipped to diagnose and repair these communication and sensor failures on-site.
Passenger cars, trucks, and SUVs that are 15 model years old or newer must pass a computerized On-Board Diagnostic (OBD-II) emissions test. Vehicles older than 15 years are exempt from this computerized test, but they must still pass the rigorous visual and mechanical safety inspection, which includes a tailpipe smoke check.
Yes. While fully electric vehicles (EVs) do not have tailpipes and are entirely exempt from emissions testing, Massachusetts law still requires them to undergo the standard $35 annual safety inspection to evaluate critical components such as brakes, suspension, steering, and lighting.
If your vehicle fails, you will receive a "Reject" sticker and a printed Vehicle Inspection Report. State law grants standard passenger vehicles 60 days to complete the necessary repairs. Returning to our station within your specific time window entitles you to one free re-test. Note: Transportation Network Company (TNC/Rideshare) vehicles only receive a strict 20-day window for a free re-test.
Massachusetts regulations require all newly purchased and registered vehicles to be inspected within 7 days of the registration date.
Per the Massachusetts RMV policy effective November 2022, motor vehicles passing an inspection will receive a sticker with the month the last sticker expired. If the previous sticker expired in a prior year or the vehicle has been out of state for over a year with an expired sticker, it automatically receives a January sticker as a penalty.
The TNC inspection is an additional safety requirement for rideshare drivers. Alongside the standard checks, inspectors verify the function of the AC/heat, the condition of the interior seats, interior lighting, seatbelts, and working windows and locks.
